The appeal of buying a lovingly stitched item from the comfort of your own computer is obvious, but if you feel like getting out and seeing some crafty goods in the flesh, you can’t go past Local Shop.
Disco Beans. The two words conjure up images of Mexican jumping beans getting funky to their favourite mariachi band. Or maybe it’s a dance party for vegetarians? On Northcote’s ever-popular High Street, it’s actually a very cool and authentic Japanese cafe/bar/gallery space, the kind you’d find in any major Japanese city hiding in laneways or up several flights of stairs in what seem like residential buildings.
Hands up who associates aerobics with day-glo lycra, leotards, legwarmers and tragic music? Jane Fonda has a lot to answer for! Luckily, the gang at Rock Aerobics are here to redress the balance, gleefully subverting those stale old clichés with a healthy dose of attitude and air guitar.
Even though it’s settled in among all the shops along High Street, you can’t miss Wild Yak, with its neon blue and yellow sign out front.
