There’s no denying that Japanese culture offers plenty to be fascinated by. But if you prefer tradition and elegance over novelty gadgets and kawaii, then Shibui Homewares is the perfect place.
Onigiri, yum / Plastic wrapping keeps them fresh / Go the pickled plum. This is our attempt at a haiku to describe Kenzan @ GPO’s specialty, onigiri, an immensely popular Japanese snack or light lunch – but more on that shortly.
Disco Beans. The two words conjure up images of Mexican jumping beans getting funky to their favourite mariachi band. Or maybe it’s a dance party for vegetarians? On Northcote’s ever-popular High Street, it’s actually a very cool and authentic Japanese cafe/bar/gallery space, the kind you’d find in any major Japanese city hiding in laneways or up several flights of stairs in what seem like residential buildings.
Situated in the Japanese strip of Smith Street, Wood Spoon introduced onigiri – a rice-ball snack, with different fillings – to Melburnians and stole some popularity from the ever-pleasing handroll.
Students at Monash University’s Caulfield campus have got it made with this little ripper of a cafe around the corner. And boy, don’t they know it!
