When I was a little girl, dawn was marked by the rattle and clink of the milko’s crate as he delivered a bottle or two of icy cold milk to the doorstep. The memory recently rose, like cream, to the surface of my mind as I sipped on an exceptionally good strawberry milkshake at Decked Café & Bar.
It’s weird to think that only a few years ago West End had just two kinds of drinking establishments. The first were swank cocktail lounges with beverage lists so intimidating and expensive, you’d have to sell a limb on the black market just for an evening of drinks. The other kind was what you’d call ‘drinking holes’: literally hole-like pubs where a few surly individuals might be ready to remove your limbs by force if you looked at them the wrong way.
When you finally make it past the bouncers and arrive in the land of the beautiful people, you know you’ve found one of Melbourne’s hot spots, Boutique nightclub.
Beautiful Boire was established by French-born Catherine Chauchat, who has not only a love of wine, but also formal qualifications in viticulture. Lucky for us, she chose Melbourne as her home and she’s brought the best part of provincial France with her.
Bar years are like dog years in Sydney, so the fact that Cafe Lounge has been a celebrated space in Surry Hills for nearly a decade is testament to its excellence.
