Imagine you could go back a few years and tell Sydneysiders that, come 2012, Redfern would have some cool bars and restaurants. People would have raised their eyebrows and thought you were peculiar. But they would have been wrong, because south of Cleveland Street is seriously happening these days, and it’s thanks to places like Dry Land Bar.
Previously an entirely unremarkable boozer called the Duck and Swan, the joint’s been spruced up big time. Gone are the pokies. Banished is the blandness. Remaining are slick interiors, cheery service, one of Sydney’s loveliest beer gardens – and clean floors.
I think I would live here if I could. Actually, come to think of it, I kind of have been of late. Redfern’s coolest small bar is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it affair tucked in between outlet stores diagonally across from Redfern’s scariest bar (Railz).
Down where George Street becomes Broadway doesn’t usually rate a mention in the guidebooks – the distinguishing feature is six lanes of never-ceasing traffic. But venture into this desolate canyon and you’ll find a classic old Australian boozer, one that’s been reborn as a kilt-wearing Scotsman.
What’s in a name? When the team behind this little bar posed the question, they decided to open it up to a democratic vote. Nearly two years on, there’s still no answer.
