Brisbane is infamous for its hilly terrain. In fact, many of its suburbs are perched on slopes so brutally steep, a short uphill walk will build enough lactic acid in your glutes to burn right through your shorts. With a reputation like that, a lot of people stay away from biking around town, but really, there’s no reason to be afraid.
Forget Wii. Grab your parasol and step through the historic white gates of McIlwraith Croquet Club. Once considered a game for ‘oldies’, croquet is making a comeback in much the same way as lawn bowls. And why wouldn’t it? Nothing beats an afternoon on the grassy expanse, either playing with friends or sitting under a flower-garlanded shelter watching your wiley challengers.
The flashback is as vivid as the colours on the palette. I’m four years old with my first set of paints. How did they trap a rainbow in a tin? Six cheerful little cakes of colour – blue, red, green, yellow, orange, pink (oh joy! pink!) – ready to dissolve with the caress of a water-dipped brush and become the sun, a house, a flower, a rainbow again.
You know what it’s like. You’re itching to get a tattoo, but you just don’t know what to get. Should you get a barbed-wire armband? Or maybe some random Japanese characters (you don’t know what they mean, but they sure look pretty)? Those are, of course, terrible ideas for tattoos, but it’s not always so easy to know if you’ve committed a dermic faux pas.
Knitting is out of the closet and in the cafe. The Three Monkeys Coffee & Tea House, to be precise. Each Tuesday night, the Brisbane Stitch ‘n Bitch group converges on the cafe’s Moroccan-themed outdoor area for knitting, stitching, crocheting, coffee-drinking, cake-eating and banter.
