Middle Eastern allsorts

Us highfalutin Darlinghurst/Surry Hills types have it all: bars, clubs, fancy gourmet grocers, you name it. But you know what we don’t get much of? Honest to goodness, authentic fare. Until, that is, you stumble upon Fatima’s on one of the inner east’s most unlikely restaurant streets.

Located smack-bang in the middle of busy, congested Cleveland Street, Fatima’s is the go-to place for some damn tasty Lebanese food – and go to they do. From a quick pick-up meal for locals, to groups of friends out for a fun Friday night, the warm and cosy restaurant draws in all kinds.

And there is a reason for that. Beyond their notoriously raucous function rooms upstairs – and the resident belly dancer who will always drag the birthday boy or girl up for a bit of a shimmy – it’s the best place to go if you’re looking for delicious home-style fare that washes down nicely with a jug of their killer fresh lemonade. The tabouli and baba ghanoush are also deserving of a loving shout-out.

And while the decor is a little dated and grungy, and may put off those used to dining at restaurants that serve fl avoured air and moussed everything, for the rest of us it simply adds to the charm. The portions are hit and miss when it comes to banquets for larger groups; some days you’re left wondering if the roughly $30-a-head price is really all that worth it, while at other times you’re ready to pre-book a hospital bed for your food coma. Roll the dice!
