The Hideaway, Fortitude Valley, BrisbaneSettle in for a groovy night out

Cosy and cheerful, with an unpretentious vintage vibe, you’d be forgiven for mistaking the Hideaway for a preserved ’70s beach shack. Potted plants look on from shelves on the avocado-green and lemon walls. There’s Scrabble on hand, and plenty of light reading, while the comfy couches are the friendly kind, there to embrace you.

The Hideaway is a haven of soul, funk and Motown. You can veg out on the low-set sofas or claim a booth to soak up the sounds while a suspender-clad bartender grabs you a craft brew or whips up a cocktail from a rotating menu of specials. I headed straight for the cocktail list and tried a fruity 1910 Fruitgum Company, built on lemonade and Pimm’s.

Miss Rosie Peaches, whose intimate burlesque events fill the Hideaway to capacity on a monthly basis, can’t go past the Lyn Fizzy (a champagne and ginger concoction). But her favourite bar features are the friendly crowd and staff, which make the Hideaway the right venue for partying down or flying solo. In addition to Miss Peaches, the bar hosts something special every night, from diverse bands to cabaret to trivia. Bar owner James Maxwell is cooking up retro cinema evenings and relaxed comedy gigs for the near future.

Whatever the gig, be sure to arrive early – a boutique bar capped at 60 tends to fill up quickly, and punters are loath to extract themselves from those couches and that relaxed holiday-house vibe.
