Shibui Homewares, West End, BrisbaneA distinctly Japanese way of life

There’s no denying that Japanese culture offers plenty to be fascinated by. But if you prefer tradition and elegance over novelty gadgets and kawaii, then Shibui Homewares is the perfect place.

Run by husbandand- wife team Justine Llewellyn and Shozo Terauchi, shibui is an ancient Japanese word that refers to a subtle, refined and unobtrusive beauty. This aesthetic is beautifully reflected in the store’s careful selection of antiques, ceramics, furniture, kimonos, and traditional fabrics and paper, all hand-sourced from markets and dealers in and around Shozo’s hometown of Kyoto in Japan.

While Shibui Homewares is renowned for stocking the best collection of Japanese antiques in the whole of Queensland – if not the whole country – the store is certainly not restricted to up-market collectors.

Delicate rice paper, fabric squares, purses and cushions can all make the perfect gift, while tea cups and other ceramic items start from as little as $8. Many of the smaller items are sewn on-site by Shozo himself, who uses his background in design to transform traditional Japanese fabrics into colourful modern accessories like bags and jewellery.

As one friend coyly observed when we visited the store, ‘This place is so pretty it makes my stomach giddy.’ I couldn’t agree more. And they even offer free gift wrapping! Domo arigato indeed.
