When you’re out for dinner on a Friday or Saturday night and going to a gig later, you don’t want to spend 4 hours at a fancy restaurant constantly looking at your watch to figure out if you’ve got time for dessert. This was the thinking of Elena Bonnici, who wanted to run a pizza restaurant that delivered not only quick service, but great quality ingredients too.
And thus, six years ago, Pizza Meine Liebe (Pizza My Love) was born, becoming exactly what Elena had conceived. The thin-crust pizzas coupled with both conventional and super-contemporary toppings are delicious and always of the highest quality. Traditionalists will love the souped-up versions of your margherita, mexicana, capricciosa and the like, while pizzas such as the fondue (mozzarella, gruyere, caramelised onion, chestnuts and anchovies) will appeal to the more new-wave pizza lovers among us. Vegetarians are also well looked after, especially with such yummy options as the smashin’ pumpkin.
Since the restaurant has become somewhat of a Northcote institution, it’s wise to make a booking for either the 6pm or 8pm sitting. (Such has been PML’s success that sister restaurants For the Love of Pizza, also on High Street, and Bande A Part in North Fitzroy, have also opened.) Or if you happen to be having a drink in any of about five bars in the area, most notably Joe’s Shoe Store next door, you can get a pizza delivered right to your bar stool.
Bonnici delivers on her promise of quick service too, so not only will you get to your gig on time, you’ll be able to savour that panna cotta or sweet pizza for dessert.
