Reading romance fiction is a bit like watching reality television – no one will admit to it in highbrow circles, but there’s a soft spot for it in just about everyone’s heart.
Rendezvous is run by expert aficionados of romance fiction, importing all of its books from the US – which has the quickest release and greatest range of titles – to cover every category of the genre.
From swashbuckling escapades to historical lasciviousness and capeswirling supernatural seduction, romance fiction is all about escapism and indulgence. And intriguingly, it’s also all about security and comfort. Whatever the backdrop, most romantic novels follow the same wellknown routine – boy meets girl, girl dislikes boy, chance encounters ensue, and about three-quarters of the way through the book, enter a scene so steamy that your reading glasses will fog up.
Decorated more like a boudoir than a bookstore, you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s a secret room out the back for the more, er, voracious reader. But there’s no pretension or snobbishness here. The books are conveniently arranged by every romance subcategory imaginable (fantasy, sci-fi, vampire, erotica, mediaeval, Scottish …?), and the staff are such connoisseurs that they’re able to make select recommendations on the spot.
If you like sneaking in a romance novel as a bedtime snack, you’ll find the Rendezvous books absolutely delicious.
