Among other qualities, the Japanese are particularly good at two things: creating exceedingly cute objects and finding bizarre flavour combinations that actually work. This combo is evident at Harajuku Crepes, where cutesy plastic food models realistically depict the crepes on offer, and quirky fillings like tuna curry or chicken pizza push culinary boundaries (but taste delicious).
Located in Melbourne Central, with another outlet at Knox City, this tiny creperie is named after a famous district in Tokyo that’s well known for its bizarro fashions and alternative youth vibe – and also for being home to some of Japan’s best creperies. Paying homage to all of this, Harajuku Crepes dishes up its unique snacks in a space that has the cartoonish quality of the kookiest anime you could imagine.
Peruse the menu or the plastic displays to select either a sweet option (hot Nutella banana, blueberry buzz and red bean custard are all good choices) or a savoury filling like classic ham and cheese. The selection of cold crepes introduces deluxe versions that incorporate such yumminess as brownie slices, tiramisu or cheesecake, all served with ice-cream.
Half the fun is watching as your crepe is prepared and wrapped up in a cone. All this sounds like it could get mighty messy, but fear not: the treats are handed over to you in a nifty cardboard receptacle, which means you won’t end up with bananas and Nutella in your lap.
