Named after Krishna, the spiritual embodiment of all things fun, Govinda’s is a two-in-one experience that’s literally consciousness-raising. Just over $28 will get you a dinner-and-movie ticket that will satisfy all five senses in a way that could just possibly get you to nirvana status.
With a balcony overlooking buzzing Darlinghurst Road and an eclectic crowd of diners, the restaurant is a favourite haunt for Gen Xs and Gen Ys from all walks of life. The opulent buffet serves up ultrawholesome and entirely meat-free pastas, daals and curries.
All the dishes are richly flavoured – guaranteed to appeal even to confirmed carnivores – and the all-you-can-eat factor means nobody ever goes hungry. Bookings are essential on weekends and advisable on weeknights. Be sure to arrive at least half an hour before your movie’s scheduled screening time, as the queue for the buffet can slow down the dining process a little.
Moving through to the boutique movie room with its carpeted walls, this is where you can check out current Hollywood blockbusters as well as thoughtfully selected independent releases.
Govinda’s is the only cinema in Sydney where you can kick off your shoes and sprawl on custom-made floor cushioning or sink into a squashy couch. And, as you’d expect of any good cinema, there’s a state-of-the-art screen and surround sound. The experience is all so good you’ll want to come back again and again. A bit like reincarnation really.
