Map? Check. Compass? Check. Signal flares? Check. In Brisbane’s urban jungle, an expedition to The Laneway Bar is an adventure in itself. In order to find it, you’ll need to keep your wits about you and your eyes peeled.

The inconspicuous Spencer Lane entrance, located at the bottom of Margaret Street, is the ‘X’ that marks this very secret hot spot. Follow the orange lights – navigating your way through old pallet crates, chain-link fences and the back doors of heritage-listed buildings – to the end of the lane, where a winding staircase will deliver you upwards to your destination.

A kind of metropolitan tree house sitting above Urbane restaurant and The Euro brasserie, The Laneway Bar is one part industrial revolution and two parts Cubism.

The Laneway Bar, Brisbane

All ceiling glass and right angles with blockshaped architecture, you can take a seat at one of the wooden benches with a glass in hand, then sip and sway under the gargantuan but contemporary ceiling fan. This is a place of fine drinking, engineered by a team of fine mixers.

There’s no ballet bottle-seizing or fast footwork in sight – it’s all class as the bartenders tailor-make delicious creations for you to savour. The house favourite cocktail is the Summers Night Cooler (vodka and four fresh juices), but more adventurous types should try The Bomb-Diggity Hog (made with bacon-infused Canadian Club and maple syrup).

So wipe your brow and set your compass to ‘relax’. After the journey to this CBD oasis, you’ll want to stay a while at this cosmopolitan hideaway.
