Your toes dangle over the edge of the platform. Your heart thumps beneath your ribs as you hold the bar and jump. Trust me, this is the real thing. The first time you leap off the ledge at the Sydney Trapeze School (STS) is a one-off experience you won’t forget in a hurry.
If you ever wanted to join the circus when you were a kid, this is the place to revive your high-flying fantasies.
The talented Taylor twins, Frank and Robert, who started the STS, have more than 10 years of international experience in the US, Austria, Singapore, New Caledonia and Thailand between them, so you can feel pretty damn confident about enrolling in a class.
Any number of high-wire activities are on offer, including cloud swing (a combination of static and swinging trapeze skills), swinging trapeze, silks and tissue (an aerial ‘dance’ featuring, would you believe, silks and tissue!) and the heart-stoppingly exciting flying trapeze classes, where you’ll finish your instruction being caught mid-flight by the ‘catcher’ 8 m above the ground!
The STS lives in a warehouse in St Peters within walking distance of the train station, and is the only indoor, all-weather trapeze centre in the city.
It’s open to the public every day of the week bar Monday, and a single class will set you back $60. They also offer three-for-the-price-of-two lessons and an intensive 10-week course, where you can hone your technique and your physique in preparation for an acrobatic performance in front of an audience of your high-flying peers.
So, the next time you’re looking for an unusual way to work up a sweat, head to the STS, chalk up your hands and take flight.
