Stitch ‘n Bitch | Brisbane

Stitch 'n Bitch, BrisbaneStitching together a yarn

Knitting is out of the closet and in the cafe. The Three Monkeys Coffee & Tea House, to be precise. Each Tuesday night, the Brisbane Stitch ‘n Bitch group converges on the cafe’s Moroccan-themed outdoor area for knitting, stitching, crocheting, coffee-drinking, cake-eating and banter.

And banter there is. You’ll learn that ‘monogamy’ means only working on one project at a time and ‘single sock syndrome’ is the tendency to lose interest in completing a sock pair.

Also expect prolonged discussions about the pros and cons of different yarns, potentially made from milk protein, banana or even recycled plastic.

It’s a relaxed, supportive and infectiously funny atmosphere, made all the more so by the venue.

The Three Monkeys’ comfortable furnishings make it easy to pass hours knitting, savouring some of Brisbane’s best cakes and sipping coffee from their trademark bowls. Other customers can be found enjoying light meals or dessert, while hunched over one of the tea house’s many board games. But the Stitch ‘n Bitch crown will barely raise an eyebrow, unless you’re inquiring on how to join.

Whether you’re working on a breast cancer awareness-themed tea cosy complete with perky pink breasts, or just a scarf or cardigan (those are still good), you’ll find the members are more than happy to teach their trade.

No RSVP is necessary and the sky’s the limit once you get involved, with online support and swaps, and information on World Wide Knit in Public (WWKiP) days. As the WWKiP-ers say, ‘Better living through stitching together.’ And as these stitchers know, a little friendly bitching doesn’t hurt either.
