Lawn bowls is a cult pastime in Sydney. But while the older set might still wear whites and bowling shoes, the younger generation has eschewed the rules and regulations, and replaced them with beers and boardies.
At Clovelly Bowling Club the vibe is decidedly casual. While the club won’t actually let you wander barefoot on the greens (like you can at Sydney’s ‘barefoot’ bowling clubs), you can get away with your favourite pair of flip-flops and a smile.
A game of bowls plus use of the barbecue is just $10 per person (BYO meat and snags). The drinks are bloody cheap too. Probably why this venue is so popular with the ‘recovery’ crowd as well as pretty much everyone else.
The club has an incredible 180-degree ocean vista, so there are plenty of photo opportunities to be had while you’re ‘putting another prawn on the barbie’. Peer to the left and you can almost spy the supermodels sunbaking at Bondi Beach. To the right, on a clear day, are the towering cliffs of Royal National Park.
Some people might prefer to go to a posh bar in Bondi for their sea views, but you can head to Clovelly Bowling Club for a cut-price version of the same thing, served up with a slice of lime.
