Back when a hard day’s work meant soot, steam and sweat, the amazing space that is CarriageWorks was home to the Eveleigh Rail Yards. Today, this cleverly renovated, heritage-listed building with its mix of exposed rail tracks, steel beams, original brickwork, machinery, high ceilings and arched windows is a brilliant setting for Sydney’s most innovative and interactive contemporary arts space.

But it is not just the building that makes CarriageWorks rock. The place is a thriving hub for resident arts organisations, where creative energy pumps through the building’s chic minimalist theatres and galleries on a nightly basis. A huge schedule of events means there is something to suit all tastes, with many for free.

Dance, experimental theatre, physical theatre, art exhibitions, installations and film nights are all in the mix. Big name companies perform alongside emerging groups. And, for those seeking something more dynamic, you can get grooving at hip-hop festivals, hit the concrete at break dance classes, or learn the moves from iconic dance films before twisting the night away.

CarriageWorks’ huge foyer is regularly used for craft markets (check the website for dates), where you can buy one-off pieces from talented Australian jewellery and fashion designers. On Saturdays, get your fresh Aussie produce at the Eveleigh Farmers’ Market opposite the entrance. Hang about for coffee at the über-stylish cafe or mingle in the evening for a drink at the bar before a show.

The great thing about CarriageWorks is that it’s not just for folks dressed in black. Its doors are open to anyone who wants to be inspired, challenged or simply entertained. More good reasons to hop on board the next fast train to CarriageWorks.

And while you’re there, be sure to check out the JohnandPeter Canteen.
