I’m not one to back down from a staring match, but it’s a little unsettling to have those eyes focused on your coffee – especially when they belong to a large Irish wolfhound towering over your seat, inches away from your face.
Cafe Bones is a dog lover’s heaven and, judging from the dozens of happy dogs of all breeds and sizes bounding around off-leash, it’s clear that it’s heaven for dogs too.
The cafe is located on the fringe of a popular dog-walking reserve in Leichhardt and has been in operation for over a decade. Owners Chaka and Michael, both avid dog owners, have created a social space for dogs and the dog-loving community to get together. And it isn’t limited to locals – dog owners come from all over Sydney, and some as far afield as Wollongong and the Blue Mountains!
Open from early morning to early evening, they serve fair trade teas and coffees, light breakfast wraps, toasties and mueslis; heartier favourites like the big dog BLT; and sweet muffins, cakes and pastries for dog walkers out at every hour.
When you order your coffee, don’t forget one for your faithful four-legged friend too.
Dogs greedily lap up bowls of Pupaccino, which, like a cappuccino, appears frothy and topped with a light sprinkling of crushed brown stuff. More (ahem) portly furry friends might prefer an upgrade to the larger portioned Dogaccino instead.
For dogs that feel they should be rewarded for that perfectly executed ‘sit’ or ‘stay’, Cafe Bones has doggie treats under their own label, Bone Bix, with an array of biscuits, and liver-, beef- and lamb-treats, all preservative-free and made from homemade recipes. So, go grab that lead. It’s walkies time!
