Viet Rose | Fitzroy, Melbourne

FEELING PECKISH?, MELBOURNE, Melbourne Inner North — By on 05/01/2012 10:24 am

Viet Rose is a casual eatery on Brunswick Street that offers a lot of value for money. Their menu is a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese food, with won ton soup, san choi bao, Mongolian beef and other dishes sitting next to their grilled beef in vine leaves, Vietnamese beef coleslaw and broken rice. The service at Viet Rose is famously sketchy, with dishes often being delivered to the wrong table and a classic ;no substitutions’ policy that may also be born out of lost-in-translations, but food is delivered hot and fast, and (mostly) fresh. Popular items are the spring rolls or grilled pork on vermicelli, served with a bowl of piquant nuoc cham; broken rice with shredded pork, spare ribs and a fried egg; and rice-paper rolls. This isn’t the most authentic of places, but the food is decent enough and if you swerve away from broth-based and MSG-laden dishes such as the noodle soups you should leave pretty happy.
