You’d be forgiven if you walked past Houndstooth without noticing it – it presents like a shopfront with its high glass window and ceilings and whitewashed brick. But you should keep an eye out for it – Houndstooth delivers simple, flavoursome food with exceptional value.
Dishes here aren’t individually priced, but tiered according to how many courses you want. The menus change seasonally and offer a wide range of vegetarian options, catering for the huge student population and Fitzroyalty who frequent the Johnston Street strip. You might find caramelised onion and gorgonzola tarts alongside spiced chickpeas, grilled scallops, peppered kangaroo and generous portions of osso bucco.
The drinks selection is surprisingly large, with more than twenty bottled beers, ranging from the mainstream to hand-crafted boutique beers and one on tap, and a predominantly Australian wine list. The dining style is communal, but this isn’t a problem as the space encourages large groups to dine at any one time. Houndstooth is definitely a bargain of a night out.
