Fico, Surry Hills, SydneyKnock knock … anybody home?

You’ve got to love a spot so comfortable in its own skin, so assured of its own cool, that it doesn’t even put a sign on the door. There’s a number, but the windows are curtained-up and you, too, need to be pretty self-assured to push open the door. ‘Are you sure this isn’t just a house?’ But once inside, Fico is all welcomes and smiles – you’re part of the club.

Cowhide-covered stools and long leather seats is where you sit; Italian wines, from sangiovese to soave, is what you drink. There’s also a decent selection of beers, mainly the usual suspects, and the calamari fritti or grilled pork-and-fennel sausages are perfect accompaniments. Make yourself at home!
